Position Summary:

The Grant Accountant / Sr. Project Accountant, has primary responsibility for assigned accounting functions, as well as grant accounting activities such as preparing grant budgets, grant accounting reconciliation and related journal entries, and grant financial reporting. Key to this part of the role is assuring grant funds are being received in a timely manner and being spent for the appropriate purposes. The position may be assigned other general ledger accounts to monitor and reconcile on a timely basis as well as providing support during the month end closing process with assigned activities across various accounting functions. The position requires a high level of attention to detail, ability to create schedules and checklists for accounting activities, working independently with a sense of urgency, and with the highest levels of integrity and accountability. An action-oriented self-starter is required for this role.

Key Responsibilities:

Grant Accounting

  • Responsibility for assigned grants and related accounting activities.
  • Coordinating and supporting program directors/managers as well as the grants officer and development functions with the financial aspects of grant applications including budgets and required financial reporting.
  • Responsible for post award compliance with federal, state, local regulations, and/or donor financial requirements.
  • Responsible for funding reconciliation processes related to billing or drawdowns from federal, state or local agencies or other sources using the methods prescribed.
  • Responsible for the monitoring of grant activity including assuring allowable spending is occurring and allocation methods are maintained, and expenses are monitored for unallowable costs.
  • Reconciles and prepares monthly, quarterly, or annual financial grant reports including the recording of required monthly journal entries.
  • Updates various systems and spreadsheets with accurate grant financial data for reporting budget to actual and as needed, grant close out accounting and reporting.
  • Coordinates external agency grant audits and data requests from program managers or grantor sources.

General Accounting

  • Supporting general ledger close processing including maintaining a checklist of responsibilities assigned and working with other staff to assure continuity of accounting processes that involve other staff or departments.
  • Reconciling key general ledger and sub-ledger accounts and oversight of a group of accounts including preparation of various required monthly journal entries.
  • Preparing and validating monthly financial reports and ledger schedules.
  • Providing periodic financial reports required by funders and performing financial analysis as needed.
  • Responsible for certain general accounting functions as assigned such as; AP, AR, Cash Management, Fixed Assets, Payroll, etc.
  • Assisting staff accountants and accounting assistants in their duties including training and documentation to support accounting processes.
  • Ensuring strict compliance with accounting, regulatory and funding standards.
  • Other accounting and financial duties as assigned.


Project Accounting

  • Support the CFO / Controller with accounting projects that span the department such as (but not limited to):
  • Ownership of the LANC Balance Sheet for quality and integrity in all accounts including a monthly balance sheet review process with various owners of balance sheet account activity and related reconciliations.
  • Accounting project coordination such as department-wide accounting process or systems reviews, improvements, and upgrades.
  • Maintenance of departmental back-up and cross-training roster of all department assignments in conjunction with department leadership.
  • Support of the organization in accounting for real estate, leases and other properties.
  • Support of the annual review and renewal of agency insurance policies working with the COO department.
  • Support the creation and reporting of department key accounting and process performance metrics.
  • Support any external audits by funding sources, or the external audit firm or other government agencies.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, accounting, finance, or in a related field.
  • Master's degree in business, finance or accounting or related accounting credentials desired but not required.
  • Previous experience as an accountant, senior accountant, accounting supervisor, or related roles, for a total of five years.
  • Excellent understanding of GAAP and/or Government Accounting Standards and relevant accounting and financial regulations.
  • Experience in non-profit or government funded organizations extremely helpful, particularly with grants.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of accounting software programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
