Co-operative Housing Community located in Chelsea, Manhattan is seeking to hire a Temporary-to-Permanent Accounting Assistant to start ASAP. This position will require 5 days/week on-site from 9am-5pm (35-hour week) with light potential for (paid) OT. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following major items. Responsibilities reasonably related to those outlined herein may be added by the Finance Manager or Assistant Finance Manager based on the needs of the housing corporation.
Primary Job Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Assist bookkeeper with monthly distribution of rent bills.
- Develop thorough knowledge of accounts receivable process and assist throughout as instructed by bookkeeper.
- Organize utility data for benchmarking filing.
- Scan incoming payments (checks) using Remote Deposit Capture system.
- Assist with application of charges/credits to shareholder accounts, including late fees, maintenance adjustments, commercial tenant security step-ups; collection of checks from lock boxes; tax transfers, ACH forms, new shareholder setup, etc.
- Participate in annual income affidavit process, including scanning and transcribing of affidavits, communicating with HPD and shareholders re: surcharge appeals, ad hoc reporting for management, etc.
- Provide support to all areas of the Finance department, including special projects as assigned.
- Interact with cooperators and other residents via phone, email, and in person meetings.
- Perform a wide range of office tasks including filing, data entry, scanning, operation of mail machine and copier.
- Develop a thorough knowledge of property management software (MDS) and use on a daily basis for many tasks.
- Work on various tasks related to homeowners' and commercial insurance including data entry, filing, response to inquiries from tenants and shareholders, regular and ad hoc reporting, etc.
- Cover reception desk on an as needed basis.
Qualifications & Skills
- 1+ years property management experience, preferably in a cooperative, or Accounting exposure in some capacity.
- Proficiency in Excel.
- Good time management; ability to multi-task.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, including ability to create basic memos, correspondence and report formats.
- Team player with a positive attitude.
- Knowledge of MDS property management software preferred not required.
Compensation/Benefits:
- Up to 58K base + Paid OT
- The position is a union position, so the employee will join local 153 when permanent.
